Hope

Species: White-handed or lar gibbon, Hylobates lar
Age: 3
Sex: Female
In the Wild: http://pin.primate.wisc.edu/factsheets/links/hylobates

HopeHistory: Hope was about 3 months old when she came to The Talkin’ Monkeys Project from a breeding facility that was closing. When she was young, she had been treated for a cold with antibiotics that have damaged her teeth. She was also malnourished.

Today, Hope is happy and, except for the previous damage to her teeth, healthy. She is a wonderful ambassador for the Talkin’ Monkeys Project in the community and really likes interacting with people, as well as her roommate, Tang.

Tang

Species: White-handed or lar gibbon, Hylobates lar
Age: 5
Sex: Male

Tang

History: Tang came from a private home. He was deserted by a couple going through a divorce and suffers emotional trauma. He was terrified of women.

Today, Tang seems to be working through his issues. While he still becomes frightened when people speak in loud voices around him, he is slowly coming out of his shell and getting used to interacting with humans and with his roommate, Hope.

Stitches

Species: White-handed or lar gibbon, Hylobates lar
Age: 34
Sex: Female
In the Wild: http://pin.primate.wisc.edu/factsheets/links/hylobates

StitchesHistory: Stitches came to Talkin’ Monkeys confiscated from a smuggler at the Miami Airport 34 years ago. She was sent to a breeding facility, where she lived for decades until she could no longer produce offspring. She was going to be euthanized until Talkin’ Monkeys gave her a home.

Today, Stitches lives with Monkeyboy. Monkeyboy was Stitches’ mate at the breeding facility and – because gibbons are monogamous – he was sent to Talkin’ Monkeys with her when she could no longer produce young. The pair is often heard “singing” to each other in the morning, as gibbons are known for the early-morning vocalizations.

Monkeyboy

Species: White-handed or lar gibbon, Hylobates lar
Age: 18
Sex: Male
In the Wild: http://pin.primate.wisc.edu/factsheets/links/hylobates

MonkeyboyHistory: Monkeyboy came to The Talkin’ Monkeys Project from a breeder who no longer wanted him because he had been Stitches’ mate. Gibbons are monogamous and, without Stitches, he would no longer reproduce.

Today, Monkeyboy and Stitches live together in a habitat that allows them to be together. They’re learning how to negotiate their new-found freedom to be together. The pair is often heard “singing” to each other in the morning, as gibbons are known for the early-morning vocalizations.

Kanji

Species: White-handed or lar gibbon, Hylobates lar
Age: 8
Sex: Male
In the Wild: http://pin.primate.wisc.edu/factsheets/links/hylobates

KanjiHistory: Kanji and his mother lived at a breeding facility until his mother became sick with breast cancer. He was sent to Talkin’ Monkeys as a foster animal and the breeder eventually decided that it did not want him returned. He has been hand-raised since he was just a few weeks old.

Today, Kanji is going through his adolescence and temporarily lives alone. Like males of many species at this age, he is a bit aggressive and just learning how to cope with his new influx hormones.

Rocco

Species: White-faced capuchin, Cebus capucinus
Age: 19-20
Sex: Male
In the Wild: http://pin.primate.wisc.edu/factsheets/links/cebus

RoccoHistory: Rocco had a traumatic life. In 2002, Rocco was rescued from a private home in the Tampa area by officers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Officers found that his owners had tried to remove his canine teeth – using pliers. In the process, they broke his jaw in three places as well as his tail and three ribs. When he was rescued, Rocco had been wearing the same diaper for seven weeks and it had stuck to his skin. Because of anxiety and stress, Rocco had plucked nearly all of his hair out.

Today, nearly all of Rocco’s hair has grown back and he is healthy and safe. However, he still has behavioral issues related to his previous abuse and we exercise care in our interactions with him.

Koan

Species: Black spider monkey, Ateles paniscus
Age: 3
Sex: Male
In the Wild: http://pin.primate.wisc.edu/factsheets/entry/black_spider_monkey

KoanHistory: Koan came to Talkin’ Monkeys from a breeding facility after he was severely bitten by another monkey. He had septicemia and was going to be euthanized when Talkin’ Monkeys got the phone call about his health. Thanks to a neonatologist, who treated him for this severe infection, Koan survived.

Today, Koan shows no ill effects of his early traumas now. He lives happily with Kelpie and occasionally even plays in the new adjoining tower cage with his friends Hope and Tang. He even tries to sing with his gibbon friends in the mornings, though his song is more of a bark!
